Griffin Switches Jersey, Scores Game-Winner

February 24, 2003
For the twelfth time in his career, Sabres captain Chris McMaster watched his good friend Chad Griffin score a game-winning goal. But for the first time ever, this goal came against the Sabres and not for the Sabres.

Three days after McMaster lost his star forward in the 2003 draft, Griffin broke a 6-6 third period deadlock with two quick goals, leading the Fire to a 9-7 victory. Griffin added three assists with his two goals to lead all scorers with five points.

Things looked promising early for the defending champions as they opened up a 2-0 first period lead. Shortly thereafter, McMaster broke his goalie stick in two and the game was delayed several minutes as the stick was taped. The Fire used that time to regroup, scoring four quick goals after the break, en route to a 4-3 first intermission lead.

Three different Sabres scored in the second period, as they managed to square the game at six-all, prior to Griffin's third period heroics.

Long time Fire forward Kevin Haddad scored three goals for the Fire in his ninth and what may be his final year with the Keane Fire. Haddad has played all 72 career games with the Fire, but since he has been protected for three consecutive seasons, Haddad will automatically become a free agent after this season. This means that Fire captain Harvey Snelgrove will not be permitted to protect either him or fellow three-time protectee Gian Scalet.

Returning Sabres players Spiro Bokolas and Dave MacKenzie led their team with three and two goals respectively. Mike Sullivan and rookie Dave LeBreton added singles for the Sabres. Kenzie Royal and Adam Pettigrew also tallied for the Fire.

After the game, McMaster was forced to pay up on a side bet he had with Griffin. "Because his team won," explained McMaster, "I have to give Chad a case of his favourite beer: Schmitts Lite."
