Slayers Roar Back From 5-0 Deficit to Douse Fire

November 14, 2003
One week after scoring the tying goal with one second left against the Lynx, Slayer Captain Gian Scalet helped provide more late heroics, as he set up Matt Wheeler with 13 seconds remaining to lift the Slayers to a 9-8 comeback win over the Fire.

Scalet had ignited the comeback with a goal early in the 2nd period, his team’s first after spotting the Fire a 5-0 lead. Following goals by Amy Scott and Wheeler, Tony Joyce scored the first of his four goals on a feed from Scalet to send the Slayers to the second intermission down by one.

Jason Fitzgerald’s point shot eluded goalie Jeff McCarthy to tie the game early in the third, and the teams traded goals to make it 6-6. Captain Harvey Snelgrove then picked the corner on Graham Dodge to regain the lead for his Fire, and when Damien Ho scored a minute later, it looked they were headed for their first win. But Joyce would have none of that, scoring two quick goals from the slot area to knot the affair at 8-8, setting up Wheeler’s game winner.

In the late game Jeff Shute’s natural hat trick in the 3rd period led the Hackers to an 8-6 victory over the Lynx. Donnie Bailey also counted 5 points with 2 goals and 3 assists. Josh Blades, Matt Blades and Mark Leblanc each scored twice for the Lynx. With the win the Hackers reclaim their 3 point lead atop the League standings.
