Hackers Win 4th In a Row; Lynx Clinch First

April 15, 2004
The LAN Hackers cruised to their fourth straight win Thursday night, a 15-5 pounding of the Lite-Sabres. Though the Hackers were led in scoring by their usual big guns, it was the inspirational play of their Captain that they later said spurred them to victory.

Perhaps inspired by the heroics of the newly-retired Mike Sullivan the week before (see previous story), Terry Davison took the opportunity to suit up for the shorthanded Chill in their matchup with the Fire. In the first period of this game, Davison took an accidental high stick which dislodged one of his contact lenses. Davison left the game but returned in time for the third period. After Pierre Martin’s third goal of the game gave the Fire an 11-8 lead, it appeared the League’s last place club was headed for their first victory. But Jason Roland’s power play goal opened the floodgates for the Chill, and with the score tied Davison rifled home the game winner on a pass from Mike Hashem.

With hardly any rest between games, Davison then led his own team to the rout of the Lite-Sabres. Jeff Shute scored 4 goals and Donnie Bailey three, but the Captain had 3 points despite the fact, it was revealed later, he had no vision in his left eye. “Maybe he should leave the contacts home from now on”, suggested one of his players. With the win the Hackers move within one point of the Sabres for 2nd place and a quarterfinal bye.

Notes

The Lite-Sabres loss clinched first place for the Lynx, who had dumped the Slayers 19-5 on Monday. This marks the first time neither the Hackers nor Sabres will finish atop the standings…Sabres Captain Chris McMaster missed his second straight game with what the team reported as “flu-like symptoms”. As a precaution, McMaster was sent to the Dominican Republic for treatment…The Chill are unbeaten with Jeff McCarthy in goal (2-0-1)…The Fire’s loss tied the record for most consecutive defeats in one season. That mark was also set by a Fire team, the 2002A edition which also dropped its first 8 games before winning its final two
