Blood, Sweat and "The Juice"...week 7 Recap

November 9, 2010
Hi again folks and welcome to another week of HFHL action. This week saw some great games as the regular season begins to wind down. Let's not waste any time getting to the meat and potatoes of this weeks schedule.

Bulldogs 5    Fire 5

This was a barn burner. The Bulldogs and the Fire played a great game with some good goaltending, some great goaltending and a penalty shot to boot! it was a classic battle with a 1-1 tie after the first, a 3-3 tie after the second and then each team scored twice in the third. Fire captain shone as usual with a 5 goal performance..hey wait a minute, he scored all five goals??? What a performance! All that being said, Bulldog's goalie Tom Wynn played a super game as well turning aside 55 of 60 shots and with some spectacular saves as well. Meanwhile, Fire goalie Blair Hammond played a good game but not well enough to give his team the Wynn.  Ha! I made a funny!
There was some controversy in this one. In the second period long time league veteran Donny "Beetle" Bailey picked a pass out of the air to score a beautiful goal much to the dismay of Fire keeper Blair Hammond, who hasn't played in the league long enough to understand the rules on high sticking. Referee Martin Kane was quick to call the goal as "good' while his counter part, Graham Dodge, questioned the height of Donny's stick when he contacted the ball but the call on the field stood.
Again, yet another question arose when a penalty shot was called by Dodge when Roy Monk covered the ball with his hand while in the crease. Gill "The Magnificent" Mombo, made one move too many and lost his forward momentum, leading to a whistle to stop the play before he was able to get a shot off. That being said, Blair Hammond made the save, even though the goal would not have counted.
Yet one more issue arose here when Donny Bailey and Mark Thompson had a "clash" of sorts in the corner and Thompson received a large gash just above his left eye which bled profusely. Oddly enough, the only penalty called on the play was a holding penalty on Thompson. things that make you go HHHHMMMMMMMM...........

Just to clarify the high stick rule. If your stick makes contact with the ball above the cross bar, it is a penalty. If your stick comes up in a crowd in a way that is dangerous to those around you, it is also a penalty. If you draw blood with a high stick it is an automatic 5 and the rest of the game for you! So, in short, keep your sticks down. Also, when the ball is in the "crease", a defending player cannot place his hand over the ball. If he does, it is a penalty shot. However, a player can push, scoop, kick or use any other means to move the ball and it is ok. Hope this helps you understand things for the future!

Slayers 6   Lynx 5

Another close game here folks as the undefeated Slayers relied on the goaltending of pick up Tom Wynn to squeak this one out. Wynn, turned aside 51 shots in this one to prove again that he is one of the premier goalies in the league. The Slayers were led by...guess... none other than Peter "The Heater" eddy and Mike "the Tall Guy With a Scruffy Beard" Cogdon. What a surprise!!! This was a great game and saw the last goal of the game decide the game. Cogdon netted the winner off of a pass from Eddy that beat Dodge, who played an awesome game himself. No real news in this one, just that Slayers coach peter Eddy best get his butt in gear and find a goalie to replace his draft pick Matt Warnell, who has by the way been called up to Midget Triple A, or something better than our league anyway. he has to pick a league approved goalie before the 9th week or he will have to use one of the players that is already on his team! Ouch, Cogdon in nets??? Maybe he needs to make a "TRADE" for some of the would be keepers in the league...we'll see what transpires.

Titans 8   Sabres 5

The Sabres carried a 4 - 3 lead into the third in this one, but couldn't keep the mighty Titans from taking control in the third. Seems that John "Get Off My" Couch has been going to hockey school or something because he has really stepped it up this year when his team needs him the most. he netted 3 in the third to make the difference in this one. Also, new comer Brett Kiley or Wiley...you be the judge, has added a great scoring punch as he picked up 3 goals and a helper. This Titan team could be one of the dark horses coming into the play off run. It was rumored that Titans star captain Jeff Shute missed this game as a result of a possible arm reduction surgery. Something that could keep him sidelined until next week. Oh and another mile stone in this game. Shaun Goodwin actually smiled!

Chill 7  Hackers  3

It was different team on the floor this week for the Hackers. well, the players were the same, but it was a much better effort put forth in this one. Some speculate that the recent grumbling of cup kissing goalie Mike "The Deer" Hunter may have caused enough ripples in the organization to get the team to step it up a bit. All this being said, they proved to be no match for the Cowie-less Chill, who were just too quick, too strong and too lucky to loose this one. This also marked the triumphant return of league all time scoring leader (duh, de, de DUUUUHHHH) Tony Jooooooyyyyycccce. who had a hat trick to lead the team. The Chill defense was another big reason they won this one.
We spoke with Mike "the Deer" Hunter about his teams effort. he had this to say "Well, I told them that I loved them all and that maybe after the game tonight we could get together and sing a song. So I came up with this, it's sung to the tune of "We Are the Champions"
"We are the Hackers my friend and we'll save our winning til the end....
We are the Hackers, we are the Hackers, let's get some ice cream cause we are the Hackers....of the league!"
"Yea, anyhow, what did you think? I know it's not original but it fits the team well. I love these guys. Gotta run, I'm buying the ice cream tonight!"

This is a rather disturbing bit of news. We discovered that some one in the league is on "The Juice", now we know it wasn't Jeff "My Arms Are Some Big" Shute, because he didn't play last night. But, we found evidence of this when we were cleaning up at the end of the night. There were two "Juice" boxes left by someone and the league is not impressed. Johaan Tienhaara, our coveted Commish, said "It was a pretty disturbing find. I mean the fact that someone is actually on the stuff is bad enough, but to bring it to the game is just way over the top. We'll keep an eye out and if anyone comes in with a purple tongue or blue lips, we'll know who it is and then deal with it accordingly". Any one who might have any information on where the "Juice" came from are asked to contact the league. I do believe that these boxes were "Dino Buddies" brand. Shame shame.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen. Week 7 has come to an end. We're done with the cross overs so for the rest of the year it's stay in your own division, which will shape the final standings for the year. I hope you all have a great week and remember, better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Now you get YOUR eyes checked!
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and have a great week!
