Let The Games Begin! Week one 2011 recap

February 1, 2011
Cowabunga and toodly doo neighbour! We're back for another great season of whiffle ball action as this past Monday night saw the 2011 "A" season finally get under way. This season was looking like it might be a high scoring one as teams excepting one or two are looking pretty loaded when it comes to fire power. So enough of my boring rhetoric, let's get this show on the road.

Bulldogs 10  Hackers 6

Now this started out as a whopper of a game. Blair "Rockin' Chair" Hammond was a force this night as he back stopped his team to the win while at the other end, Marty "Candy" Kane took a kicking from both teams as he filled in for an ailing Jason Boudreau.
This one was all even after the first with a one all tie. Adam Secord, maybe a long lost relative of Al Secord, former NHLer, started his career in fine fashion scoring the first goal of the game for the Hackers, while long time veteran Jon McLeod answered back for the Dogs.
The second period saw the Hackers take the lead as they netted the first two but thye Bulldogs kept coming and both teams had added three in the second. This made it even at 4-4 after the second.
the third was really the heart breaker in this one. The Hackers jumped out in the lead with two goals on Hammond, but unfortunately, they scored three on Kane as well, which gave the Bulldogs the lead without even having to do anything! The Dogs just kept on rolling and added 3 more for a total of six unanswered goals to lay a serious beating on the Hackers.
Craig Biedler led the Hackers with 4 goals while the Bulldogs were led by Toooooonnnnyyyy JOOOOOYYYYCCCEEEE, who had 5 points on the night.
We asked Bulldog captain, Mark Thompson what the formula was for their succes. "Reisen's...yea, that's what we used. You know the candy? Well I kept a pocket full of those puppies and every once in a while I'd throw one in the corner. When the hackers "D" men saw them, they would just run away from the net and voila! We have a clear opening. It also didn't hurt us that one of their "D" had 7 points...6 of them were for us though."
So there you have it folks. these are the "Reisen's" that the Bulldogs won...get it...Reisen's!

Titans 12   Lynx 3

My oh my, what do we have here! Could this be the team to beat this year? the Titans have fielded yet another serious contender as they are loaded with scoring and have a great goalie in Chris "The Fish" McKinnon (we'll come up with a good one sooner or later dude)
Roger "The self proclaimed Ninja" Keating wasted no time saying "I'm Ba-ack" as he scored the first goal of the game and added a helper on the second as the Titans took a 3-1 lead into the second. The Mighty Titans really blew it open in the second scoring 6 goals while the Lynx were held to 1. The end of the third could not come soon enough for the Lynx as the Titans added 3 more.
The Titans were led Roger "The Self Proclaimed Ninja" with 7 points and by team captain Jeff "My Arms are Some Big" Shute, who had 6 points while the Lynx were led by jack of all trades and master of none, Greg Sullivan, who had a goal and an asssist.
Tom "I Need Some Help To get The" Wynn, was pasted with 65 shots while "The Fish" McKinnon faced 41. An impressive outing for the rookie goalie.
We asked Chris his thoughts on the game. "Can you smell that? That is the scent of "The Fish" baby! you better get used to that smell too, because I'm going to stink the place out this season guys...hey wait a minute. That wasn't right was it. Well you know what I mean! Beware of "The Fish"...(makes that sort of kissing sound like when you put your lips together and make them go like a fish...ahem, not that I have ever done that, but you have!)
The Titans declaw the Lynx easily in this one.

Fire 13   Chill 13

It's 13 to 13 after the third. No...it's not the Super Bowl, it's the battle of the elements as the Chill and the Fire faced off for the first time this season and left now doubts about their fire power, but certainly questions regarding their defensive games.
League leading scorer Adam "Wowie" Cowie picked up 7 points in this one while the Fire were led by their captain Rob "the Rhino" Tyrrell, who had 4 points.
the goalies both played pretty good considering the fire power they were up against.  Rookie John "The Don" Rathbun had 47 shots while Pierre "Joyful" Joyal faced 31 shots. There was nothing exciting about this one. too much scoring and in the immortal words of Shania...That Don't impress me Much!

Sabres 8  Slayers  6

The Sabres are the new look team, new captain, new players, like 4 rookies, and new outlook on life as they started their season by sticking it to the offense loaded Slayers. This was anyone's game in the early parts. Sabres goalie, Martin "Candy" Kane came up a few big ones early on as did rookie goalie Dan "The Man" Samson. This only lasted awhile as the scoring then came fats and furious and the Slayers led 4-2 after one. The second saw the Sabres score 5 more while the Slayers added 2 which left the game at 7-6 for the Sabres. the third saw Kane take over as he stopped all 23 shots in the third while new comer Matt Melady added one more for insurance to give the Sabres a sure victory. This was a great outing for the Sabres as they were missing two key players in Tyler "The Horse" Morse and Doug "The Pug" Forrest.

So we have one more issue to bring up here this week. it is a rather disturbing one. it's the issue of "Tight" shorts. Now we like to think that this went out with wheelies and roller skating, but seems that there is at least one dude living it up in the tighties. This has to stop. It's hard enough to go home after a big run and get to sleep let alone having to be faced with that horrific image of "Tight Red Shorts"
The league would like to extend the opportunity for all or any of you who wish to donate to the "Buy The Guy Some New Shorts" Fund. This will be a voluntary thing, for the time being, and all donations can be given to Richie "Rich" Wannamaker. Be a sport, please support!

One last thing. new this year we will report a few milestones as they come about so keep an eye out for this during the season.
Milestones for this past week were as follows:
Roger Keating scored his 300th regular season goal
Richard Wanamaker broke the 200 goal barrier picking up his 201st goal last week

Did you know that long time "D" man Rob "Tiger" Tighe averages more than a point a game for his career? Mister consistency.

So that's how it all looked from here. This is Bill Concarney saying so long and remember...it's 2011, not the 70's...please don't do that to us again! :0)

Be well folks!
