Close...but no cigar.
Titans 6 Bulldogs 4
This was a great play off game between the league regular season leading Titans and the last place team in the Bloomfield Division, The Bulldogs. The Titans jumped out in the lead by scoring the first two but hot on their heels was none other than
Tonnnnnyyyyyyyy Jooooyyycccceeeeeee, who popped two of his three goals to keep this one tied. Blair "Rockin' Chair" Hammond brought his "A" game and kept it close all the way through. The second period saw Titans star Roger "The Ninja" Keating step it up and score two goals and added an assist, his only points of the night, but what proved to be the winners. Titans keeper Chris "The Kiss" MacKinnon played a great game as well and as always gave his team the back up they needed to stay on top. This was a great play off game and the Bulldogs should be proud of how they made a game of this. Not something that a lot of folks thought they could do.
Chill put the freeze on...
Chill 14 Hackers 6
The Chill once again showed why they are a force to reckon with as they brought their explosive offese to bear on the lowly Hackers. Facing 57 shots, Jason "Will he or won't he" Boudreau did in fact show up and did all he could to try and keep his team in this one. Newcomer Jeff "I'm headed out of" Townley had a great game picking up 6 points while his team mate Adam "Don't Have A" Cowie added his own exclamation point by picking up 6 points also.
Sheldon "Conan" O'Brien picked up two goals and played his best game of the year.
We asked hackers first year GM Craig "Beetle Juice" Biedler his thoughts. "Man those guys are fast. I mean see them run? They keep coming and are just relentless. I pity the team that has to face this juggernaut in the next round. These guys are finals bound, no doubt about it."
Candy gets the Wynn
Sabres 4 Lynx 3
So this was a smokin' game. The Lynx came out with nothing to loose and played that way as they gave the Sabres all they could handle. Tom "I Almost Got The" Wynn played a super game making glove save after glove save to give the cats a chance to take this one.
The Sabres held a 3-2 lead until about minute and a half left in the third when a ball went off of someone's back and found it's way to the net for the tie. Actually the Lynx picked up their second goal much the same way as it was a shot that hit someone's foot and made it's way to the net. If it weren't for all these excuses, the Sabres would have won the game outright.
The end result was a rare shootout. The first three shooters missed their chances as Kane and Wynn held their ground to keep it scoreless. Dave "Mini" Cooper scored first for the Sabres, followed by a nice goal from Matt "The Punk" Monk to tie it up. Wynn stopped Doug "The Pug" Forrest with a big glove save. Not to be out done, Kane did the same off a shot by Kevin "I'm Bad" Haddad. This set the stage for Roy "I'm Coy" Monk to enter the story line. The gym got quiet (except for all the commotion coming from the other side) and Monk started his stride. Down the center of the court he came and then slightly, ever so slightly he drifted to his left. He eyed his spot, the far side. The glove side. The same side that Wynn had guarded so well all night. He shoots...he scores! Roy "the skunk" Monk earned every bit of trade he was made for by ending this shootout with the winning goal. This was just an awesome game and both teams deserve full props.
Karma's Got A New Name Baby!!!!
And it's Pierre "Karma" Joyal! Remember last week? When the Hackers couldn't get a goalie to play for them so Sheldon "Conan" O'Brien stepped up. For those who saw this game it was a bit of a shock to see a team that was so dominant keep coming and diving and trying so hard to run the score up. Well, a certain reporter mentioned something about a thing called karma. I guess there are just some things you don't do.
On this night, a power house team in the form of The Slayers were supposed to go on with a relatively easy win and get ready for the second round. Apparently no one told this to the Fire who came out on fire! The Fire took control early and left the first period with a 3-2 lead. After the second, they held a 6-4 lead. The Slayers were scrambling. but not out of it. The third was a doozy as game went back and forth until late in the period the Slayers, as they had done so many time this season, scored the tying goal and forced a shootout.
This is the part when anyone who knows these teams would say "the Slayers are going to take this with ease", but the one thing that nobody figured in all of this was Karma...Pierre "Karma" Joyal! This guy is not supposed to stop Barry "I wish I was" Coolen...but he did. This guy was not supposed to stop Matt "Take That" Grove...but he did. This guy was not supposed to stop Gil "The Magnificent" Mombo, but he did, he did and he did!
The long and short of it is that Coolen missed his first shot, Clarke missed his first shot. Grove scored then Goodwin scored. Gil missed, Tyrrell missed. Gil missed again, Tyrrell missed again. Coolen scored and then Goody missed. So here is the drama...everything is even. In comes Mombo...out comes Joyal...and he keeps coming out...Gil was confused, a goalie doesn't run out of his net and track a player down in a shoot out, but no one told Joyal. Gil lost control and the fate of the Fire season rested in the hand of the Rhino. Tyrrell moved forward in a manner some could only describe as the "dance of the leprechaun", moving side to side bouncing from leg to leg, to and fro he moved the ball all the way saying is his weee little head "I'm a leprechaun and I must score". Then with one sudden sweep he shot the ball through the legs of keeper Patterson and that was it...the Slayers were slain by none other than Pierre "Karma" Joyal. A lesson for all to lear I guess.
So there you have it folks. the second round is set and it will see the Titans play the Fire while the Sabres will have their hands full with the Chill. I wonder who's name Karma will choose when the play offs resume in two weeks. Stay tuned and see for yourself.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember, these two things. First, there are no games on this coming Monday because of the easter weekend. secondly, there is no such thing as the Easter Bunny, but there are such things as leprechauns...we saw one the other night playing for the Fire!
Be well folks
