One More To Go week 9 recap

November 19, 2019
Hey there neighbours! This is Billy Concarney here with your week 9 recap. The play off picture is a wee bit clearer after this week and we will take a look at the scenarios, but first...let’s see what went down at the “Fish Bowl” last night.

Fire vs Lynx

The Fire have been living up to their name as of late and due to a late season surge, have become one of the favourites. The Lynx have been struggling a bit but still have a great team.
Well....this one looked more like a football score by two tight defensive teams, but can’t say that there was a tone of defense in this one!
Myles Raymond went on a rampage in the first scoring a natural hatty to give his team early control in this one...and it just snow balled from there. The Lynx kept it close scoring the next two but the Fire answered back with Two more when Fire captain Sean Fitz buried a slapper followed by the first of Anil Snooks 5 goals off a feed from Mark Mcguigan. But the Lynx kept pace when Sammy Halliburton, sporting his best Conner McDavid hair cut, ripped a wrist shot top corner. So after the first, we got a game as they say, Fire up 5-3.
The second saw the dynamic duo of Sampson and Snook start to take control. Not to mention Jordan Castilloux’s tenacious play. Anil scores a hat trick while adding an assist to a Sampson goal. Castilloux grabbed two assists on goals by Anil and Dan “Boomer” Cavanaugh who tipped a slap shot past Boudreau. The Lynx kept slinking around though as league veterans Trevor Mcguigan and James Griffin-Allwood both added goals on passes from Sam “McDavid” Halliburton and Paul Chang. This one was slipping away...11-6 for the Fire after the second.
The third was pretty uneventful...so much so that even Aaron Brown scored...yes that’s right...nad it was a beauty too! A crisp snap shot low blocker side. Anil Snook picked up the helper on that goal. Jordan Castilloux grabbed a goal from Sampson who also fed Anil for his 5th of the night. Chris Innes scored for the Lynx off a feed from Paul Chang, but Sampson closed off the scoring for the night when Anil Snook fed him a nice pass to make it easy.
This was the second blow out in a row for the Fire who have had some great goaltending from Adam Larder as of late.
Nail Snook’s 5 goals and 2 assist performance was enough to give him this weeks HFHL Player of the Week honours. Way to go Anil!
Fire take this one 15-7

Hackers vs Slayers

Next up we have the game of the week as the two top teams faced off at the bowl. The Hackers had a chance to clinch first place and the Slayers wanted to keep pace. The Slayers and the league welcomed back top goalie Paul Highmore as he returned from a lower body injury.
The first period saw the Teams even with both goalies being stingy. The Hackers struck first with what can only be called a seeing eye shot. Alex McLeod took a slap shot that was going outside left and then somehow curved along the ground to beat Highmore five hole. Bit the Slayers answered back when Alex Gale scored. A power play goal from Wade Mullen and the first period ended 1-1
The Hackers started the second period with a power play that saw Dave Cooper score on a rebound off of a Jonathan Hunson slap shot. Things stayed quiet until mid way through the period when Hunson scored his first of two off a pass from Gill Momborquette and after the second the Hackers took a fragile 3-1 lead into the locker room.
The third period saw both teams pick it up a bit and both goalies answered the call. The forward line of Hunson  and Momborquette added another tally to the game sheet when Gill passed to Jonathan who made no mistake beating Highmore on a deke. This was followed up by a rocket by Alex McLeod who ripped it top shelf. The Slayers closed out the scoring when Shane Erb slipped a pass Alex Gale who finally scored on his third attempt.
Kane stopped 19 of 20 shots in the third and the Hackers played a solid game in front of him. Hackers take this one by a real hockey score of 5-2 and with the win, clinch first place overall.

Chill vs Sabres

Last game of the night was the Chill at the Sabres. The Sabres have seemed to find their stride as of late while the Chill have had attendance issues...and tonight saw both teams short benched.
The first period seemed like a normal start to a normal game, Sheamus McDonald scored unassisted with a slap, shot. Matt Strum scored unassisted with a bang bang goal. Travis Bury scored unassisted and I can’t remember how because I’m old. And to close out the scoring Travis scored his second of the period off a feed from rookie...ha that sounds funny, Marty Mitchel. After the first it was the Sabres up 3-1.
The second has the league scratching their heads with wonders of water bottle tampering or something. Although not the case, the period just seemed like an endless power play and Chill goalie Bob Strum was left hanging to dry like the clothes hanging on the line in that Newfoundland Tourism commercial...by the way, if you have never been to Newfoundland, you gotta go! (This message was not sponsored by the Newfoundland Tourism Association)
Without getting into too much detail, the Sabres scored 7 goals. It wasn’t pretty. That sort of sealed it for the Chill,
The third saw the Sabres score 4 more while the Chill added one more.
This was a strange game for sure.
The Chill will have to do some soul searching going into the last game of the season and the Sabres take this one 14-2

So here is how thing look going into the final week.

The Hackers will finish in 1st place because of season face to face records.
Second place is still up for grabs and will depend on what happens this week. The Sabres currently hold a one game advantage and if they win or tie will clinch second.
The Slayers will take second with a win and a Sabres loss.
The Fire look like the will end up in 4th
The Lynx and the Chill have identical records so this week will determine who gets the chance to play Cinderella.

So that’s it from here folks.
This is Billy Concarney saying some long and be well!!
