So with out any further ado, let's get at er!
Hackers 7 Bulldogs 4
So there were a couple of questions that needed answering as the night started. Did Adam Secord draft a team that was going to be a force this season? Did Dave "Super" Cooper end up with the boss team everyone thought?
Was Adam Schellenberg a flash in the pan?
Well, this game was going to provide answers to all of these questions and maybe even a few more we don't know about. The night started out with the Dogs controlling the play and they took a quick two goal lead that took the Hackers by surprise. Schellenberg was held to one shot in the first...and it was the Hackers only goal as the Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead into the second.
The second saw Schellenberg take control along with his team as he scored two more and then things just went downhill for the Dogs from there. At the end of the night, Schellenberg amassed 5 goals and 2 assists to lead his team to the win.
Titans 9 Lynx 4
So when Nick "Oscar" Myers took the helm of the Titans this year, there was speculation by the critics that his lack of experience in the Gm role might hurt the Titan's chances to repeat this season. Well I think everyone stopped back as his team did the talking on the court. Led by first round pick Alex "The Mighty" Gale, the Titans owned this game from the get go. They scored 5 goals in the first. The second saw the Lynx try to mount a comeback, but it wasn't happening this night. Craig "the Gargoyle" Burgoyne grabbed his first win of the season with a solid performance, while Chris "That Guy" McKinnon took a beating even though he made some great stops as well. He could be in for a long season.
Slayers 12 Sabres 6
So what happens when a captain goes all snaky in the draft and makes the most trades ever made in one night? Well you get a bunch of new guys all on one team. The Slayers, or dubbed "the Young Guns", came out of the gate swinging and were led by a rather surprising cast. In his rookies debut, Eric "The Geyser" Eisener scored a natural hat trick and then added three more assists to start things off. The Sabres, who arguably had a better team on paper, were no where to be found. Trevor Swain was peppered as he faced 45 shots and a relentless attack all game long. Other notables were Richard "The Pony" Wanamaker who had a memorable night serving the rest of the league that he was not to be counted out as he picked up a hat trick and two helpers. We asked Johann, the Slayers captain, what he thought about his team's performance. "How you like me now Concarney!!! You think I can't pick em' now? yea, you counted us out right from the get go didn't you. I guess you are eating your words now aren't you...hey, where did you go? Hey, I'm not done. Is this thing on or what? hello? Hi Mom!"
Fire 9 Chill 4
After years of facing each other in one fierce battle after another, Rob "The Rhino" Tyrrell finally and a chance to pick his long time nemesis Marty "The Party" Kane. So when his pick came around, he took Kane in the first round. Many scoffed at this move because the two don't have the best record when it comes to "love" amongst players in the league. But all differences seemed to be put aside as both turned in a solid game tonight. The Chill started off with the first two goals before the Fire ignited into a frenzy led by Scott "I'm Hot" Cross who had 5 goals and an assist, yes your read right, Scott Cross had an assist! Also, team captain Rob Tyrrell had a hat trick and two helpers. The Chill had a bright spot in new guy Jonathan Darnbrough who had his first two goals in his career. Worth while to note that Doug "The Pug" Forrest came out of the woods for this one sporting his new Duck Dynasty like beard. The Fire by far have the oldest team in the league, but they might just be a sleeper this season.
So there you have it folks. The league has asked that we remind everyone that you cannot use wooden or composite blades on the floor at Stad. There were a couple of culprits last night and if they show up with those sticks again next week, they will not be allowed to use them. Canadian Tire has a great assortment of sticks suitable, from ABS blades to wooden blades with a plastic insert, which are totally legal.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember, honesty is always the best policy...unless the question is
"Does this make me look fat"...then you might need to rethink things...
Be well folks and see you next week!
