Slayers vs Chill
Well…this was a first. In the 47 seasons our league has been in operation, we have never had this happen. Seems that sickness and injury has penetrated the Chill dressing room and as a result they could only field two of their own runners in Cameron Power and Warren Churchill. As a result, both refs, Paul Chang and Myles Raymond had to jump in and play as spares. Without their willingness the Chill would have had to forfeit the game. Thanks fellas!!
Despite being severely short handed, the Chill managed to hang tight with the Slayers and actually outshot them in the first period. The power house Slayers were only able to score two. Sheamus MacDonald from Scott Henry and then Jeff Withers from Trevor Thompson. 2-0 Slayers after one.
The second saw Cameron Power grab two quick ones from passes by Paul Chang and Warren Churchill and it was all evened up. That was until Sean Fitzgerald slid a sweet pass to a streaking Jordan Castilloux and the Slayers had the lead back. The Chill answered back with a blast from the point by Warren Churchill, which fooled Burgoyne and the Churchill picked up another assist passing to Myles Raymond to give the Chill their first lead of the game. Unfortunately for the Chill, the Slayers have many weapons, one being Matt Strum, who closed out the period with his first two of the game both from Jeff Withers. Slayers took the lead back going up 5-4 headed to the third.
Matt Strum scored the first of the third to round out his hat trick “aux natural” off a feed from no one, because he is a hog…oops sorry. Paul Change answered back on a feed from Churchill to keep it close. But rookie sensation Jeff Withers added two in a row on passes from Sheamus MacDonald and Matt Strum to take a two goal lead. The teams traded goals, the first coming from the Chill with Myles Raymond scoring on a pass from Cameron Power and then Jordan Castilloux was rewarded for some hard work as he picked up an unassisted goal that closed out the scoring for the night. After a valiant effort, the Chill suffered their first loss of the season 9-6 at the hands of the Slayers. Adam Larder turned in a great performance and kept things respectable for sure.
Sabres vs Lynx
The Sabres finally had a full squad out and the Lynx were missing captain Rickie Miller. The ball dropped and the Lynx opened the scoring when Shane Erb took a Stu Whidden pass and redirected it past Boudreau. But the Sabres answered back when Ben MacDonald beat Marty Kane off a pass from Alex Yeadon. Yeadon then scored a goal of his own from Gord Fitzpatrick to give the Sabres the early lead. Stu Whidden answered back when Erb assisted on his tally, the Lynx closed out the period with a nice goal from Justin McKinnon from league Ironman Rob Tyrrell. 3-2 Lynx after the first.
The Lynx added to their lead whenAndrew O’Keefe scored his first of the night from Tyrrell. Yeadon then scored his second from Ben MacDonald and Justin McKinnon grabbed another as the teams traded goals. Chris Inness got on the board with his first of the night on a feed from Alex Yeadon but Andrew O’Keefe grabbed his second of the game from Rob Tyrrell to keep the Lynx ahead by 2. The Sabres answered back with two quick goals, one by Ben MacDonald from Paul Chang and the second from Myle Raymond who took a rather mundane slipper from the point beating a visibly upset Kane on the trapper side. This cam from the hard work and a great pass from Gord Fitzpatrick, who has been on a bit of a point spree as of late. All tied up! Unfortunately for the Sabres, the Lynx went on a bit of their own scoring spree as the nabbed 3 goals in a row, Whidden from O’Keefe, Tyrrell from Collier and O’Keefe from Collier. This gave the Lynx a bit of a cushion headed into the 3rd.
The Lynx kept it coming scoring the first two goals of the period when Andrew O’Keefe scored his fourth of the night on a feed from Whidden and then Tyrrell scored his second of the night again from Whidden. The Lynx were on their way with a 5 goal lead…but wait, the Sabres weren’t ready to call this one quits. Team captain Kyle Bradbury rallied his groups and followed up with a nice goal down low on a feed from Yeadon, Yeadon then grabbed his third of the night on a pass from Myles Raymond. The Sabres kept coming when Bradbury scored again on a feed from Raymond and the Sabres were within two. But Kane made a few key saves and the Lynx managed to hold on to the win. 11-9 for the Lynx in this high scoring affair.
Worth while noting that Sabres rookie power forward Alex Yeadon is this weeks player of the week grabbing 3 goals and 3 assist in a losing effort.
Fire vs Hackers
Both of these teams have been trying to find their groove. Both teams coming off of much needed wins last week and they wanted to keep it going. The first opened with long time league veteran Mark Duggan grabbing a quick goal on a feed from Fire captain Alex Gale. But the Hackers stormed back with three unanswered goals, one by Wayne Hardy from Nick Briggs, Tommy Zivanovic scored from Jonathan Hunson and then Hacker captain Joe Murphy closed out th3vcsoring for the period on a pass from Geoff Briggs. 3-1 Hackers after the first.
The second saw Tommy Z score his second of the night on a pass from Nick Briggs, who we might add has been playing great the last couple of games. Nick’s bro Geoff then scored an unassisted goal to give the Hackers a 5-1 lead. But Fire Captain Alex Gale fought through a. Crowd and scored one on his own to stay within reach. Unfortunately things started to get a bit heated and as a result Alex Gale was a bit over exuberant resulting in a booking penalty. Hackers rookie D man Dan Carver made the most of a pass from Tommy Zivanovic to get the power play goal and virtually dashing the hopes of a Fire come back. Hackers were up 6-2 after the second.
The third saw the Fire put a bit of a push on as new guy Liam Oxner made a couple of unbelievable taps to get himself some room and ultimately was rewarded with a “bat out of the air” goal on an individual effort. Erik Gale followed up with his own effort to grab a goal unassisted, but the Hackers Dan Carver dossed the Fire with a blast from the point to beat Kennedy coming from a Joe Murphy feed. That closed out the scoring for the night and this one ended up 7-4 Hackers. Worth while to note that Kevin Kennedy played an awesome game last night facing 49 shots.
Well that’s how it looked from these eyes this week. The Slayers have moved to the top of the standings but lots of hockey left to play here folks. It is still wide open.
This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember…saying so long and have a great week all!!!
