Delayed Reaction- week 9 recap

January 13, 2023
Where n the world is Billy Concarney???
Well, I haven’t been basking in the sun somewhere in Mexico that’s for dang sure, but I am apologizing for two things, one for being tardy and two for how short this recap is going to be!
But let’s get at its.

Sabres vs Fire

The Sabres were once again short on numbers and facing a team that has been hot as of late in the Fire. They were only missing one so had a big advantage on the running side of the game. Sabres played hard and Craig Burgoyne made a large number of saves to keep it as close as it could be. After the first it was 2 zip for the Fire.
Second saw things break open a bit as they score two quick goals to go up 4 to 0, but the Sabres rattled back scoring two of their own but the Fire grabbed another two and it was 6-2 after the second.
Third saw Sabres vet Liam McLeod grab two goals but the Fire added three more and this one ended in a 9-4 win for the Fire.
Notables for the Fire were Alex Gale who tallied 4 goals and 3 helpers and for the Sabres, Aaron Brown and Liam McLeod each had two.

Hackers vs Slayers

A shortage of goalies this week saw Adam Larder jumping in for an ailing Jason Boudreau.
This was a battle for sole possession of first place headed into the final week. The Slayers were missing their star rookie Jeff Withers and the ever Marner like Chris Inness, while the Hackers had a full squad.
First period say the Hackers grab three while the Slayers had two and it was looking pretty close after one.
Second period saw the Slayers slash their way into a lead as they scored the first two. But Johno Hunson scored to even it up, followed by a Slayer goal from Jordan Castilloux to get the lead back. Before the period ended power Forward turned D man extraordinaire Geoff Briggs tied er up and this sent it into a third period that actually meant something.
The Hackers came out fast and furious…hey, that could be a movie franchise title or something…wait…
There tenacity paid off and they took a two goal lead early on. Hunson from Murphy followed by Geoff Briggs. Castilloux drew the Slayers within one, but took a controversial penalty on the play after the ball was in the net, putting the Slayers short handed late in the game. The Hackers made no mistake and closed it out with a power play goal and thus gave themselves the win and sole possession of first place…but that can all change  this Monday.

Lynx vs Chill

Talk about attendance issues. The Chill had just four guys. The Lynx were without oldie goalie Marty Kane who is out with lower body injuries. First period was close, With Lynx going up 2-1 after one.
Second saw the Chill tie it up right away, but then the Lynx scored 5 goals in the second to the Chills 3 and Lynx started walking away with a 7-4 lead after the second.
The third saw the Chill start of thing with another goal getting them within two, but Lynx front man Stu Whidden scored two quick ones and they added one more giving them a 10-5 win.
Honourable mention goes to Lynx rookie Stu Whidden who had 6 goals and a helper. His performance gives him this weeks player of the week honours. Way to go Stu! The win also paces the Lynx with the Slayers who are tied for second, just one point away from the Hackers.

So that was how last week looked, now let’s take a quick look at the scenarios headed into the last week of regular play.

So as of right now, the top three spots heading into the last week and play offs scenario are filled by the Hackers, Slayers and Lynx. The only change there will be who finishes where. The Hackers have a tough game on their hands with a face off against the Fire this coming week. The Slayers face the Chill which is a long shot for the Chill to win this one. The Sabres face the Lynx, which is kind of a toss up depending which team shows up for the Sabres.
The Fire are going to finish in 4th
The bottom two spots will depend on what happens this week with the Chill and the Sabres. The Chill hold a one point lead for 5th.
Our play offs are a one game elimination exception being the first round. The three winners advance and then the team that loses with the lowest differential advances to play the top seed in the second round. In the event of a tie, a teams regular season placement will determine who moves on. So lots to look at after this weeks final games of the regular season.

Well I’m outta here peeps. This is Billy Concarney saying so long and remember, you signed up to play…be there!
Be well and sat safe folks!
