Last night marked the starting point for the quest for our coveted HFHL Championship grail…The Tarnished Cup!
So without any further ado, let’s get this party started!
Sabres vs Hackers
This one looked pretty even on paper…but unfortunately for one of these teams, paper doesn’t win games!
The ball dropped to start the first and the Hackers came out runnin’ and gun in’ led by team captain Joe Murphy. Joe was in on the first three goals as he set up Power Forward Geoff Briggs for the fits goal of the game and then followed up with two of his own. One from Greg Wheaton and the other from Mike Giles. Myles Raymond jumped in on the action with a hot shot to the top corner on a pass from returning vet Kyle Bradbury and the Hackers had a commanding 4-0 lead.
Sabres captain Jonathan Hunson broke the ice with his first of the season on a feed from Jason MacIsaac. But Greg Wheaton followed up with a solo effort to give the Hackers a 4 goal lead headed into the second. Worthwhile to note that it sounded like Greg Wheaton was giving some advice to a Sabres player about the etiquette of shaving one’s legs. Not sure where that came from but good on Greg for being Mr Congeniality!
The second saw the Sabres come to life and they scored three to start the period. Jonathan Hunson buried a pass from Rylan Smith on a power play followed by Anil Snook ripping a snapper past Kennedy on a feed from Smith, then Rylan Smith scored his first of the season on a pass from Jonathan Hunson. The Hackers stopped the bleeding when Geoff Briggs scored his second of the contest on a feed from Joe Murphy then Aaron Brown grabbed his first of the night on a feed from Eddie “The Eagle” Briggs and Joe Murphy grabbed another point on a solo effort and the Hackers were back in front by a few. Jonathan Hunson kept his team in the hunt when Gord Fitzpatrick slid a nice pass his way. That was Jonathan’s third of the night or a hatty as we call them down here. 8-5 Hackers lead after the second.
The third saw the Hackers take total control as they scored the first two goals of the period firs Kyle Bradbury from AJ Brown then Geoff Briggs once again from Joe Murphy.
The Sabres tried to rattle back, when Rylan Smith scored two in a row, both from Tommy Zivanovic. But too little too late and the Hackers win their first game of the season 10-7.
Slayers vs Lynx
The Slayers have a different look this season. Team captain Matt Strum was looking to start the season with a win. Stu Whidden was very confident that his drafting strategy put him in a great spot this year and he was ready to show the world just why his name is Stu…Whidden! … ?
The Slayers were indeed sporting a new look…one of short handed nature as they were missing 3 of their first four picks. But that didn’t stop them from scoring first as Jordan Castilloux grabbed his first of the season on a feed from Jeff Withers. But The Lynx took advantage of the Slayers short bench knocking down four goals in a row. Sam Halliburton made his return with a solo goal. Then Stu from Tyler Arsenault, Brett Dempsey from Stu Whidden and then Brett again fromShannon Thoms and the Lynx had a 4-1 lead after the first.
The second saw the Slayers come out with two quick goals. Matt Strum from Jeff Withers followed by Jeff with a wicked slapper top shelf all by his lonesome. But the Lynx answered back with Tyler Arsenault getting extremely lucky on his shot on a feed from Stu Whidden. The Eric Gale blasted a slapper in the bottom corner on a feed from Brett Dempsey. The Slayers came storming back with Mark Duggan scoring on a pass from Matt Strum and Liam McLeod put his name eon the score sheet on a pass from Jordan Castilloux and the Slayers were back within reach. But Brett Dempsey picked up his third of the night on a pass from Eric Gale followed by a lone start effort from Trevor Thompson and the Lynx were starting to pull away. 8-4 Lynx after two.
The third started with Eric Gale scoring his second of the night on a feed from Stu Whidden. Jeff Withers answered back for the Slayers on a feed from Jordan Castilloux. Stu Whidden added to his point barrage with a breakaway goal on a pass from Eric Gale. But Jeff Withers picked up his hat trick on a feed from Jordan Castilloux. The Lynx were still out front by a few and they added to that with Stu Whidden scoring two more breakaway goals both from Brett Dempsey.
The Slayers managed one more power play goal for Matt Strum from Jeff Withers. But this one was all Lynx in the end as they pulled off a convincing win with a 12-8 victory. Stu Whidden had 4 goals and 3 assists. And somewhere off in the distance, the faint sound of Sean Fitzgerald’s voice could be heard saying “why, why did you draft that guy!” See what happens next week.
Fire vs Chill
Welll finally a hockey score!!
The Fire were looking to get a good start and the Chill were ready to cool the Fire down.
The first was a quiet one with the only goal coming from Rickie Miller on a feed from Alex DeSousa.
The second saw the Chill add to their lead when Shane Erb, who has arguably the best hands in the league, scored his first on a feed from Rickie Miller. ThenFire answered back when returning vet Keven Pittman scored tow in a row, one from Alex Gale and the other all by his lonesome. But Rickie Miller scored his second of the game again from DeSousa. But Rob Pittman added to the Fire tallies with a solo goal and this one was all tied after two at 3-3.
The third saw the Fire come fast and hard as they fired 25 shots at Craig “the Gargoyle “ Burgoyne and he stood on his head. But the Fire still managed to grab three unanswered goals and as a result took this game 6-3
So next on the agenda is our Knapper Player of The Week award. This weeks winner is Stu Whidden, captain of the
Lynx. He had 4 goals and 3 assists and gets a Knapper T-shirt for his efforts. Way to go Stu.
Well that’s how it looked from here. Great first week to everyone. Played like we want it here in the HFHL.
this is Billy Concarney saying so long and be well pees!
