Its been a long 9 weeks but we are one game away from rapping up another great season here at the HFHL...and one step closer to deciding your fate for the play offs.
Let start by taking a look a this weeks games.
First up is the Titans against the Fire.
The Titans have had a hard time getting a full squad and its hurt them so far, but tonight they were pretty good. Had to call on the skills of Chris MacKinnon who filled in for Mike Degrace, who was out with an undisclosed lower ankle type injury.
The Fire were full except for their fearless leader Rob "The Rhyno" Tyrrell, who was absent without any given excuse!
This one was a close play off type game with the Fire grabbing 4 goals in the first to the Titans one. The second saw the teams trade a couple and after two the Fire were up 6-3. The titans came out hard in the third scoring two goals quick but that was all she wrote and the Fire squeaked out a win by a tally of 6-5
No one really stood out on the score sheet tonight, but worthy to note everyone seemed to contribute. A well played game that was pleasing to all ticket holders.
Second game we will look at is between the Sabres and the Bulldogs. The Sabres had been slumping but grabbed a win last week and were looking to keep their winning ways going. The Bulldogs have also been winning some games and were not going to back down.
The first saw the Dogs take a 2-1 lead and as the second started they scored one more to take what could have been a commanding lead...against any other team that is! Backed by the once again sensational play of Chris MacKinnon, who is in his final season at the HFHL, the Sabres scored the last three goals of the game to take a win from the jaws of the Dogs.
On the score sheet, the Sabres were led by Gord Caines who had a goal and a helper as well as Trevor "the Law Man" Mcguigan who grabbed two of his own.
The other Trevor "the Law Man" Wadden picked up two goals for the Dogs and Paul Highmore stood tall for the Dogs as well turning in yet another fine performance.
This was allow scoring game thanks to the two keepers.
Chris MacKinnon grabbed this weeks Eastside Mario's Player of the Week awards with his performance. Way to go Chris!
Next up is the Hackers vs the Slayers. This one was not a defensive effort by either team. Well...the goalies didn't start out to hot either, but lets see how this one unfolded.
The Slayers and the Hackers traded 4 goals each in the first as this one shaped up to be a high scoring affair right out of the gate.
The second had the Hackers grab three more while the Slayers fell behind only adding two. By the time the third started it was really who ever was going to hit the net last and unfortunately for the Slayers...that was the Hackers. Not an epic battle by any stretch but certainly an exciting game.
The
re were no clear dominant player in this game but several players from both teams grabbed two goals each, except Paul Change of the Slayers, who added a hat trick to his resume as did Tom Griffiths and Shane Erb from the Hackers. Good job guys.
This game was not without controversy though as with the minutes ticking away, the Slayers took a time out. Little did anyone know that according to the "Real Time" Clock, this one was over. The saddest thing about this was what ensued. Blame flew around like a loose bird in a super market , but the rules are the rules.
Note that the game is over at 930 for the first game and 1030 for the second according to our league rules. The Lynx won earlier when they were down a guy and one minute left and their captain pointed out it was 1030 and so they beat the Hackers. Also, the Karma affect kicked in as the Slayers won an earlier game for the same reason against the titans.
league commish was asked about the rule.
"well we never want to see this sort of thing happen, but it unfortunately does. The only time we will not let it happen will be in the play offs. But each team will have to remember that they have as much responsibility to keep the game running as anyone else. Hopefully we don't see any more of this"
And thats the wrap on this game. The Hackers take it 9-8
Our last game of the night is the Lynx vs the Chill. The Chill are trying to keep pace with the Fire and to do so they need a win tonight. The Lynx are trying to move up in the standings and despite a lack lustre start, have capitalized on the trade made with the Sabres which has benefited them tremendously.
This was a play off style battle as well. The Chill doubled the Lynx in the first scoring 4 to the Lynx 2. The second saw the Chill add three more to the Lynx one, but the Lynx were starting to gain some momentum.
The third saw the Lynx grab two quick goals but they could not muster any more and fell short in the come back.
The Chill took this one 6-5 and the leading man once again was Evan Canning who added 4 more goals to his season totals.
So this week saw all four games decided by one goals...do you think things are heating up going into the run for the big dance?
Lets take a quick look at the play off picture.
Current standings are
1st Fire
2nd Chill
3rd Sabres
4th Hackers
5th Bulldogs
6th Lynx
7th and 8th Titans/Slayers
The Fire and the Chill are tied at the top but the Fire have beat the Chill both times they met. So advantage to them.
The Chill could finish in first if they win against the Bulldogs on Monday and the Fire lose to the Hackers. If the Fire win, then they take first.
The Sabres clinch third with a win on Monday but if they tie or lose, then the hackers could squeak in there.
The hackers could take 3rd if the foil the Fire.
From there, there are too many scenarios. So get your captain to figure it out!
So that's it folks. Best advice we can give is win your next game and make it easy! That's your best hope. lol
This is Billy Concareny saying good night, sleep tight and Go Leafs Go!!!
Be well folks
