Welcome to the dance! 1st rd recap

December 5, 2023
Well well well, here we are, at the Big Dance. The regular season is over and now everyone is on an even playing field. They hold the keys to their own destinies and we are going to see where things will go. This is you 1st round play off recap…and I am Billy Concarney. Let’s get er’ done!

Chill vs Hackers

This is the David vs Goliath scenario. Chill finished last place, Hackers were boss all season. The Hackers were missing their goalie Kevin Kennedy, but Bob Strum was filling in so they were still in great shape.
The Hackers started the scoring by drawing first blood when Joe Murphy buried an Eddie Briggs pass. But this was short lived as Chris Inness and Rickie Miller teamed up to with Chris scoring a natural hat trick on passes from Miller followed by a lone tally by Alec DeSousa and they jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Myles Raymond scored next on a pass from Joe Murphy but Trow Winsor grabbed a power play goal on an Alex DeSousa feed to keep a three goal lead. But before the period ended, Joe Murphy scored his second of the game on a pass from Geoff Briggs. 5-3 Chill after the 1st.
Alex DeSousa grabbed the first goal of the second from Troy Winsor giving them an early 6-3 lead. But the Hackers went on a tear and found themselves in the lead with 4 unanswered goals. Joe Murphy all alone, Kyle B from Joe, Geoff Briggs outworked Miller to score and then Myles Raymond sent a boomer past Burgoyne on a pass from Joe Murphy. But the Chill answered back when Shane Erb buried a Troy Winsor pass. At the end of the second, we had a 7-7 tie.
The Chill came out gunning in the third and scored three quick ones. Winsor from DeSousa, Inness from Miller then Troy Winsor from Alex DeSousa once more. The Hackers tried to rally when Kyle Bradbury scored on a Murphy feed followed by another Bradbury goal from Greg Wheaton. This got the Hackers with in one. But Tommy Winsor scored a lone goal and when the buzzer went, the Chill were moving on with an upset victory over the Hackers. Final score was 11-9.

Fire vs Slayers

The Slayers were looking in trouble only fielding 4 runners and an old washed up goalie. The Fire had all but one and were feeling pretty confident.
The ball dropped and the Slayers came out flying and they seemed to catch the Fire smouldering as they scored 5 quick goals. Jordan Castilloux from Jeff Withers, Matt Strum all alone, Sean Fitzgerald from Jordan C, Jeff Withers from Jordan C and then Jordan from Fitz. Alex Gale stopped the bleeding a bit when he scored the Fires first from Rob Tyrrell. Then Matt Strum scored his second on a feed from Jeff Withers. Rob Tyrrell closed out the first period scoring on a feed from Paul Chang. After the first it was the Slayers with a commanding 6-2 lead.
The second saw these teams trade scoring. Matt Strum scored first unassisted followed by the Fire’s Mark Slaunwhite who snappped a low shot bottom corner on a pass from KevenPittman. Jordan Castilloux added to his nights totals beating spectrum on a breakaway thanks to a Sean Fitzgerald pass. The Fire added another goal when Alex Gale beat Kane offa Keven Pittman pass. 8-4 Slayers after the 2nd.
Jordan Castilloux scored once again from Matt Strum to open the third period scoring. Rob Tyrrell answered back once again beating Kane on a feed from Paul Chang. The next two belonged to the Slayers as Matt Strum added two on feeds from Jeff Withers. The Fire scored three more to finish the game with goals from Alex Gale, Adam McKenzie and then Keven Pittmans, all from Rob Tyrrell. But it was not enough as the Slayers surprised the Fire taking this one 11-8. The score sheet shows Kane stopped 31 shots, but we are guessing that the rest of the Slayers stopped more than that as they blocked a ton of scoring chances. This final score eliminated the Fire from a chance to advance.

Sabres vs Lynx

Well, it all comes down to this to see who will move on. The Lynx were favourites in this one, but they were about to face the masterful performances by the Two Jason’s. I will just say that Jason Boudreau stoop strong and really gave his team a chance to win this game. He made some HUGE saves especially in the third. Jason MacIsaac was also a force grabbing a hat trick and two helpers, but also he was tenacious on the ball all night long.
The first period was all Lynx as they outshot the Sabres 18-3 but Jason B only gave up one goal in all of that. 1 zip Lynx after the first.
The second saw things open up. The Sabres scored 5 goals in the second to the Lynx 3 so it was 5-4 Sabres headed into the third.
The Sabres came out in the 3rd grabbing the first two goals and taking a commanding 7-4 lead. The Lynx grabbed the next one but the Sabres then scored two more and it looked like the Lynx were not going to get out of the first round.
But…remember the whole masters of your own destiny thingy at the beginning. That brilliant desplay of journalism and foreshadowing? Well…the Lynx were out…then they scored one…then another. But they needed one more to get in…and one more they got when Stu Whidden scored on a Brett Dempsey feed. The siren went and the Lynx had mustered just enough scoring to lose to the Sabres by a 9-8 score…and thus allowing themselves to move into the last spot for the semis.

Congrats to Jason Boudreau for being this weeks Knapper Player of the week. Great job Jason
