Things were flying for the Keane Chill. Since signing star goaltender Ryan MacDonald after their first game (a loss to the LAN Hackers, 13-8), the Chill have gone 3-1 with only 31 goals against. MacDonald, a rookie sensation in 1999B, had his career delayed by a leg injury at the end of that season. He returned, fully rehabilitated, for the 2001A season with the Keane Chill. With MacDonald between the pipes, the Chill rocketed up the standings to sit in 3rd place behind the Lite-Sabres and the Hackers.
But then, with games against the two leading teams upcoming, disaster struck. At the end of the Chill's 13-9 victory over a depleted Lynx squad, MacDonald felt something strange in his knee. Thinking nothing of it, he went home for the night without reporting it to the team's doctors. The next morning, the gruesome reality of the night before appeared. Unable to bend his knee, team doctors diagnosed MacDonald with torn cartilage and a damaged MCL. His season was done.
The team took it pretty hard. Forward Trevor Murphy and defenceman Barrie Harvey took the news to heart, beginning a marathon drinking binge. At press time Monday afternoon, both players still seemed drunk. Third string keeper Pete Rankin developed a phobia of hockey nets, claiming he'd never go in net again, and transition man Gord MacPherson disappeared completely - the team is still looking for him. And in the strangest incident, defenceman Jeff Dixon, scheduled to join the team this week from a training facility in the Carribean, became so enraged at the news that he grew to Godzilla proportions and attempted to stomp a small village into oblivion. When the dust settled, Dixon was left with a badly burned foot, and the Chill was without another player.
GM Mike Griffiths was shaken but determined. "We'll sober the boys up and carry on.", Griffiths stated. "But I'm still trying to figure out what Shawn Currie had to do with all of this. This must be revenge for the Dooley-Burgess trade, but I can't figure out how he did it..." When contacted for a statement, Currie's agent said that he would respond when he returned from the voodoo conference in the South Pacific that caused him to miss last week's game.
Will the Chill regain the form it once had? This week holds the answers. The Chill meet the LAN Hackers Thursday, while the Lite-Sabres, tied for first with the Hackers, play the Fire Tuesday night. This weeks other game pits the Lynx against the Slayers in Thursdays other game.
