Red Hot Rankin Leads Lynx into First Place

October 3, 2002
The ADC Lynx moved into sole possession of first place on Thursday, defeating the Sunnydale Slayers 6-5. Peter Rankin, forced into goaltending duty when starter Tony McCarthy was a no-show, stopped 50 of 55 shots. Notably absent from the Lynx line-up were snipers Blaise MacPhee and Craig Mercer, leaving Rankin to provide the heroics.

The Slayers outshot the Lynx 55-32 in a game that featured as many shots hitting the goalpost as there were shots finding the twine. Tony Warnell led all scores with two goals and two assists, including the game-winning goal in the third period. Phil Pellerin, Rob Tyrrell and Kenzie Royal all had a goal and an assist to lead the Slayers.

It looked like the Lynx had the game well in hand, after Mike Hashem's second goal of the game gave the Lynx a 5-2 lead. But the Slayers dominated the play in the third period, outshooting the Lynx 18-6 in the stanza. John Matheson scored for the Slayers against his former team to close the gap to 6-5 with minutes to go, but Rankin and the Lynx were able to withstand the barrage.
