I'm Billy Concarney and here is the news.
So you remember when you used to stay up late to watch that TV show on CBC where former hockey players took up figure skating to see how skilled they were at the "dainty" sport?
Well, Johann Tienhaara is dainty and a figure skater, but that has nothing to do with this game!
This was the Battle of the Blades, the Slayers vs the Sabres. The game was goal for goal until some guy starting running random patterns and then making passes to the other team and stuff. Then in a flash it was all over! The Sabres took control in the third and outscored the Slayers three to one in that frame giving them the win. Worth while to note that Mike Degrace got third star of the week for his performance in this one. Also worth while to note that the Slayers lacked three of their scoring forwards in this one. Might have been a different outcome if they had been there. So the brining question is...Where Were You?! Sabres win this one 7-5
The small floor saw the Titans take on the Lynx in the 8:30 match up. This one went back and forth as well. The Titans were missing their "big guns" so to speak as Jeff Shute and his arms were not present. Under manned and overwhelmed they relied on the smokin' goaltending of the on again off again Jason "Boom Boom" Boudreau, who put on what can only be described as a fluky, I mean stellar performance. The Lynx had all of their big names including the number one pick from this years draft Matt "the hat" Clarke. But nothing they could do would change this one. Boudreau's spectacular saves gave his team a chance to win this one and win they did! We asked Boudreau about his game.
"yea, well I went on a diet of Lindt chocolates and Donairs this summer. You know, trying to beef up my game a bit. Everything fell where it was supposed to and so it worked you know. I am doing one of those promotional videos called "Taking up more room...a goalies diet plan" Look for it on sale at fine Donair establishments near you.
Titans take this one 7-6
So draft night was held last week, and from afar, Dave Cooper, the captain of the "A" season champ Hackers, cleverly put together a string of picks. The consisted of new guys, old guys and some fungi's, and when this mix and mash team took the floor..well HELLO BABY, they were on fire! Bang, bang bang, goal after goal, wave after wave. They just kept coming and coming. To the tune of 15 times! That has to be a record for one night...in the HFHL...by those guys..er this is awkward.
The Hackers were way too strong for the Bull Dogs, who just didn't have any bite at all this night. The only bright spot for them was Doug Forrest, who brought the same game he had last year with a great performance.
Hackers win this one 15 - 4
The final game of the evening was between the Fire and the Chill. Both captains walked away from draft night confident that they had picked a great team. Well this one was a slug fest! tit for tat, goal for goal...all night long they traded blows. But in the end it was the Chill who prevailed. This was not a goalies game as the score ended up 12-11 for the Chill. But you know what they say, a win is a win...unless you are Tom, then it's a Wynn!
So there you have it folks. After week one, the team to beat is clearly the Hackers. Chemistry abounds for these guys and they are a run and gun team that is going to be tough to keep down this year.
Join us again next week when we look for the answer to that burning question "Are the Fire the hottest team in the league?"
have a great week and be well folks!
